Lemon juice was used in diet since many decades. But it was only recently that it’s popularity soared to a new level, mainly because some celebrities were able to shed their unwanted fats drinking lemon juice.
Since lemon juice is widely popular amongst the scientific community for it’s cleansing power, it was used mainly to get rid of some serious toxins from our body. In early days lemon juice was primarily used to bring down the ill effects of unhealthy eating habits, sedentary lifestyle and depression, but now it is being highly advised by doctors and health experts for faster weight loss. But for achieving that we need to drink an awful lot of lemonade. But these health experts also warn against the ill effects of such accelerated weight loss by drinking only lemon juice. That’s because lemon juice does not contain any proteins, fats, carbohydrates, calories and fibers, though it has a good amount of various minerals and vitamins. And this can prove dangerous to some people. Also this type of diet is not recommended for people suffering from ulcers, hyper acidity or citrus allergies.
You have to follow this lemon diet for at least a fortnight or 2 weeks and then you can gradually switch to soups and then more solid foods like fruits or vegetables. But do remember that lemon based fat loss diet is pretty hard to follow and it can cause giddiness, weakness, nausea, constipation, excessive craving in many people.
Though this diet is hard to follow, lemon is a rich source of vitamins A, B and C, citric acid, amino acids, phosphorous, copper, magnesium, potassium, sugar and calcium. And it is also very good for your liver and it also improves bowel movement and reduces wrinkling. Slow bowel movement is dangerous to your body and retains toxins. But lemon is powerful enough to remove all that. We should know that our body cannot get all the required nutrients just by losing fat, but it also needs to flush out all the wastes on a regular basis.
Instead of a lemon juice diet, it is also very good for our body if we include lemon peelings in our diet on a regular basis, which is a rich source of pectin. This is excellent for reducing the sugar absorption and maintaining a steady energy level in our body and it also can control the unwanted craving.
So even if you are not courageous enough to follow this hectic 2 weeks lemon diet, you can include lemon in your diet regularly, replace vinegar with lemon juice and still shed those unwanted fat from your body. You can also add 1 -2 tea spoons of lemon juice in the tea that you drink regularly.
A typical lemon juice diet will have 6-7 glasses of lemonade and should be prepared in the following manner – Add two tea spoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice, two tea spoons of maple syrup, pepper and little bit of salt to 300 ml of water and drink this in the morning.

Why is it that detox works with lemons but not with say, strawberries or oranges or pineapples? What is it in the makeup of the DNA of the lemon that makes it so effective at detox?

Here is something amazing about lemons and detox:
Lemons found to be the most effective citrus in boosting healthy catechins in green tea. “[N]ew research shows that although green tea is high in catechins — antioxidants that have been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular disorders — the amount of these substances that are available for absorption by the body are lower when they’re consumed solely in tea. . . Under 20 per cent of catechins, which include EGC, EGCG, EC and ECG, remain after digestion, say [researchers at Purdue University in a study published in the November 2007 issue of Molecular Nutrition and Food Research]. . . The researchers believe that citrus juices and vitamin C protect catechins from oxidative damage in the intestine. According to Mario Ferruzzi, assistant professor of food science at Purdue University in Indiana, and the study’s lead author, catechins break down in non-acidic environments, such as the intestines, leaving less than 20 per cent of the antioxidants to be absorbed after digestion takes place. [However, when citrus juices or vitamin C are added to green tea, catechin levels are increased.] Citrus juices, including from limes, grapefruits, lemons and oranges, increased the levels of catechins by more than five times, with an 81 to 98 per cent recovery for EGC, 56 to 75 percent for EGCG, 86 to 95 per cent for EC and 30 to 55 per cent for ECG. Lemon juice was the most effective at preserving catechins in green tea, the study found.” (No author credited, “Green tea up to 5 times as healthy when citrus juice added,” CBC News, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Wednesday, November 14, 2007)
Just add lemon juice to green tea and you’ll boost the impact by 5 times.
