Over the years, Louisiana surely has gotten its fair share of news coverage thanks to Hurricane Katrina and the Mississippi flooding. Even though most people are aware of the news coverage, they truly have no idea what it’s like to live down there. There is also another water crisis happening down there, this time in a small subdivision in Broussard, LA. This unannexed community is facing a water crisis that impedes their ability to live a normal life. It’s very important that actions be taken to resolve this crisis quickly.
Although this subdivision is completely surrounded by Broussard, it has not been annexed to the city. The city has concentrated on annexing commercial areas since they bring in revenue. That has left the people of the subdivision out in the cold, so to speak, when it comes to sharing the clean, fresh water available in the rest of the town. Instead, these residents are forced to watch the homes all around them receive clean city water while they remain on a system where the water is so grungy they are unable to use it for cooking, bathing, or laundry. Citizens exhibit sores and blisters caused by exposure to the liquid.
Residents have tried to find ways to live with the water problems. They’ve tried to use water filters, but the price of operating them is very high since they go bad very quickly. Although drinking bottled water may seem like a good solution, some residents don’t enjoy the added expense that it requires. This water isn’t even suitable for doing laundry since it makes the clothes even dirtier. In vain they have appealed to the city of Broussard to annex them so that they can hook up to the city water, but the city is not quick to go along with this idea.
The hang up, as with most things these days, is money. Although the Broussard water system operates well, it could not be stretched to cover the annexed subdivision without a great cost. There isn’t enough money to fix the problem thanks to the fact that Louisana doesn’t have any property taxes. You may be wondering what this means for the homeowners. Basically without usable water and with homes that have no resale value, because no one wants to live there. Doc No.sdlkh-sdAE
