Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA): a research review

by on August 3, 2011

Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate is the most efficient form of Arginine, an essential amino acid. It delivers the most beneficial effects of plain L-Arginine and does it with smaller doses, making it a more convenient and effective supplement than just Arginine.

A precursor of nitric oxide and polyamines, (metabolites) Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate plays a key role in a number of metabolic functions including (but not limited to) increased blood flow which in turn promotes recovery from trauma, anabolic metabolism and protein synthesis.

Simply put, AKG is the body’s primary source of creating nitric oxide, the chemical secreted by the lining of human blood vessels, a reaction necessary to promote blood flow. NO, as it’s called, is a primary contributor to protein synthesis when present in your muscles. AKG stimulates the production of nitric oxide regulating blood flow, muscle growth and a complex arrangement of other functions that each contribute to healthier, more effective exercise. AKG causes the body’s muscle building blood vessels to dilate, allowing blood to be pumped continually during exercise and remain gorged throughout the day. This action encourages increased muscle size, body strength and endurance, all positive contributors to a strenuous exercise program aimed at getting the best possible results.

AKG also promotes the release of growth hormone from the pituitary gland and natural insulin secretion, increasing Arginine and glutamine volume, essential for maintaining healthy muscle during extreme physical activity (such as serious bodybuilding activities) and has an anti-catabolic effect which subsequently aids in the recovery from trauma or injury.

Secondary positive effects of Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate include improvement of male and female libido, reduced certain long-term effects of ageing, promotion of growth in children and is believed to control hypertension.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid or CLA is found in meat and dairy products primarily produced by ruminants with kangaroo, beef and mutton having the highest content of the other animal sources. Originally discovered to be an anti-carcinogen, it has since been found useful in reducing cardiovascular disease and is thought to reduce weight gain while increasing muscle mass. These last two benefits make CLA very attractive as a supplement for bodybuilders.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid is also an anti-oxidant which aids in fighting inflammation, the catabolic effects of immune stimulation. This stimulates the metabolism which in turn helps with weight management. CLA effectively reduces body fat gain while at the same time increasing lean body mass gain. Again, the natural-occurring effects of Conjugated Linoleic Acid is extremely beneficial to those athletes and bodybuilders who are serious about their exercise regimes.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid benefits recap:

*Helps to burn off stubborn body fat while encouraging lean body mass

*Is already part of a natural diet so there’s no waiting period while the body adjusts

*Reduces cholesterol

*Stimulates metabolism

*Is a natural anti-oxidant

*Increases muscle mass

*Is an anti-carcinogen (helps prevent cancer from forming in the body)

*Reduces cardiovascular disease

While CLA occurs naturally in foods like beef, mutton, milk and cheese, obtaining enough to benefit a serious exercise program would require a serious intake of these foods, completely negating the merits of the exercise in the first place. A dietary supplement is the only practical answer – but which one is the best?

The company which has patented the most effective means of delivering CLA for use in dietary supplements is Tonalin®. When recommending Conjugated Linoleic Acid for bodybuilders we strongly suggest that only those supplements containing Tonalin ® be used as these will ultimately be the most effective. The Tonalin® patented formula allows for 1000mg of CLA per supplement serve, far exceeding any other CLA supplementary product on the market.

Clinical studies have shown that the only people who should not use Conjugated Linoleic Acid supplements are those individuals who are grossly overweight. Otherwise the supplement is considered not only safe, but beneficial.
