Low Sodium Diet
A regulated or low sodium diet is an essential part of a healthy eating strategy.
So what is Sodium
Sodium is a component part of salt or sodium chloride (NaCl). A level teaspoon of salt contains roughly 6,200 mg of salt and approximately 2,400 mg of this is sodium.
There are many different sources for salt and each of these can contain differing amounts of other minerals such as potassium or magnesium.
Why Sodium?
Our bodies need sodium as it forms part of the basic structure of the human body. All our body fluids (blood, sweat and tears) contain an amount of sodium. It is essential that correct levels of sodium are maintained. Sodium retains water and therefore it dictated the volume of the blood. It also influences the size of our arterioles (smallest arteries). Increased sodium levels will therefore cause the heart to work harder because it has to pump a greater volume of blood through thinned arteries. Hence the well documented relationship between high blood pressure and excessive sodium/salt intake.

Where Do We Get Sodium From
Sodium is present in most foods in the form of salt. In some foods such as celery sodium is naturally present. More commonly though salt is added to preserve the taste.
Fast foods and processed foods generally have particularly high level of salt.
Some fresh foods including fresh fruits, vegetables, poultry, fish and lean meats contain low levels of sodium. These foods are the ones to target for a low sodium diet.

Talk about processed foods; bought a can of Campbell’s soup once and oh my! I like salt but give me a brake, that stuff will dry you out.
Thank you for this post. Healthy eating is becoming more and more of a concern to most people!
Whenever I come to your blog now, the text looks really small. Did you change something with your design? I can’t read the type when it’s like this. Please advise, I don’t want to miss your great posts! Thanks.
